Cub Scouts at DRG
Last weekend, 16 Cub scouts and parents from San Ramon spent the night at Diablo Rock Gym. The 6 to 10 year-olds started the night off with pizza, climbing, and then some sleep that night in the gym. Climbing fits in perfectly with the Cub Scouts theme. The cubs often go hiking, camping, and on other outdoor adventures.
According to the Cub Scout website, "The aim of Cub Scouting is to help boys grow into good citizens who are strong in character and personally fit." The boys were able to work on their leadership skills, facing adversity, and helping each other out through belaying.
Diablo Rock and the other Touchstone gyms often have overnighters at the gyms. Stop by and check out the great overnight trips that are going on at your local gym.

New Diablo Rock Gym Manager Hans Florine
Hans Florine, 46, began climbing 28 years ago at San Luis Obispo, where he went to college. A dorm mate invited him to a 20 foot boulder in the middle of a cow field. Rigging a toprope, Florine began climbing. From there his life as a climber took off.
Florine has been a long time member of the Touchstone community. From working the front desk at Berkeley Ironworks, to building the cracks at the Oakland gyms, to teaching clinics over the years, Florine explored the different Touchstone communities. Recently, Florine took the position as the manager of Diablo Rock Gym, the climbing gym he has been training at for over 5 years. “I feel honored to have a relationship with the owners and managers, to take a larger role, and commit for a longer time,” Florine said of the position. “I want to expand the membership so that we have a more vibrant group and more energy in the gym. We’ll be strengthening our relationships with families, nearby companies, colleges, and surrounding groups. We provide the best atmosphere for a climbing community. We want people to know that.”
Since 1980, Florine has climbed El Capitan 144 times and climbed The Nose 72 times. Beginning in 1990 with fellow blonde rock star Steve Scheneider, Florine whittled down the speed record on The Nose from 6 months on the first ascent by Warren Harding to a blinding fast sub 3 hour time. Florine is world renown for his fast ascents and has written a book “Speed Climbing: How to Climb Faster and Better.” Florine also works as a motivational speaker, discussing his success on El Cap and relating it to corporate models. Florine spends his free time with his wife of ten years, Jacki, his ten year old daughter, Marianna, and his seven year old son, Pierce.
Stop by Diablo Rock Gym and meet up with Hans Florine, the manager. Check out the new programs and activities he has planned for the gym!

Diablo Rock Gym in Concord now has access to a heated indoor pool. Partnering with Aquatech, one of the premier swim schools in the bay area, Diablo will have full time access to the lap pool with classes coming soon.
You can also visit Aquatech during office hours to check in, register for programs, ask questions, change schedules or find out specifics for events and clinics.
Russell Olsen, the Touchstone Director of Facility Operations, spent the summer supervising the building the pool.
Originally the pool was used for scuba diving lessons and it was 15 feet deep in the middle and four feet on the side. He filled the pool in so it is now a 4 foot deep lap pool. The task involved a lot of research on pools, chemicals, and concrete.

Sunday, August 29, from noon to 3pm, Diablo Rock Gym and Aquatech will be having an open house show off the pool construction. Drinks and refreshments will be served.

Wildlink Climbs at Diablo Rock Gym
On Saturday, June 27th, five students from the Environmental Studies Academy (ESA) in Martinez, CA met with WildLink (WL) Community Coordinator, Paul Martin, for a rock wall climbing session at a gym in nearby Concord, CA. Martin emailed a short write-up of the trip.
"After being equipped with harnesses, shoes, and some chalk for the whole group by the instructor, Ryan. The first exercise for the group was rope and belay orientation facilitated by Ryan. When our group proved to Ryan that we understood the safety techniques we started to explore the various features in the gym. The overall ability of the group was very impressive with certain standouts: Maddy and Jimmy – bouldering, Sophia and Jacob “Tarzan” Ford – ropes, Cheyanna…everywhere. The staff at Diablo was very accommodating, the WildLink Ambassadors were engaged and attentive while climbing. Overall, this was a great day program!"
Diablo Rock Gym and the other Touchstone gyms are proud to support programs like Widlink. It's awesome to provide underserviced youths with a chance to experence a step towards the wild cliffs.

This will be a series of five Roped Climbing comps that will be held on Friday evenings, one at each of the five Touchstone locations. All events will include a red point roped comp as well as refreshments, games and prizes. Points will be awarded for each comp with overall winners being announced at the end of the final comp. Climbers are responsible for bring their own belayers.
This will be a self-scoring competition with points being standardized for each comp. This means that a 5.11a route at Mission Cliffs will be given the same points as a 5.11a route at Pipeworks. Scoring will follow the format below:
Each route will be broken down into three scores. The highest score is given for completing a route with no falls. However, points will also be awarded for reaching either of the two way-points on the route. A competitor's final score for a given comp is the total of their three best routes. You will not receive points for the same route twice.
At the end of the series, your final score will be calculated from your 3 highest scoring comps. Once the season starts you will be able to see your current standings online.
For more information about the comp check out the comp page.
