Zero Gravity Crushes in Reno
The Touchstone Zero Gravity Climbing Team once again showed it's dominance at the USA Climbing, Bouldering Regional Championships. The competition was held at the Rocksport gym in Reno, NV on December 10th, 2011. In addition to winning the Team award for the sixth straight year, Joshua Levin, Cicada Jenerik, Matt Grossman, Natalia Grossman and Mirko Caballero were Regional Champions; Dylan Meyerhoffer, Courtney Ceran, Jacquelyn Wu, and Rick Gentry were Silver Medalist; Revan Florn, Seth Rogers, Hannah Grossman and Nathan Frankel were Bronze Medalists. Over all, the team won half of the ten categories, one third of the podiums and received 23 bids to the Division 1 Championships which will be held in Seattle, Washington on January 14th and 15th, 2012. The Divisional Championships will determine the invitations for the National Championships which will be held in Colorado Springs at the US Olympic Training facility. The Adult Bouldering Nationals will be February 24th and 25th and the Youth Nationals will be March 3rd and 4th.
Zero Gravity is coached by Scot Jenerik, Scott Cory and Cicada Jenerik with additional mentoring by Joshua Levin.

Zero Gravity: Interview with Coach Scot Jenerik
On August 25-28, Scot Jenerik and four of the Touchstone Zero Gravity Climbing Team members competed at the Youth World Championships in Imst, Austria. This competition was attended by over 600 athletes from 50 countries and had quite possibly the deepest pool of youth climbing talent at a world championship to date. The Touchstone athletes had a strong showing. Joshua Levin was 19th in Sport and 10th in Speed. Jacquelyn Wu was 44th in Sport and 9th in Speed. Nicholas Bradley was 46th in Sport. Will Roderick was 20th in Speed.

Zero Gravity is one of the strongest youth climbing teams in the nation. Zero Gravity were 2nd in the country for Teams at the 2011 and 2009 USA Climbing SCS National Championships and 3rd in the country at the 2008 ABS National Championships and the team has been consistently in the top 5 at Nationals for 8 years. Team members have been regional Champions the past 6 years for both Sport and Bouldering with over 40 National Champions and close to 100 US National Team Bids. A large part of this is due to the solid coaching they receive.

Scot Jenerik, the 47 year old US National Team Head Coach and Touchstone Zero Gravity Head Coach, has spent the past two decades living in San Francisco and the past 11 years coaching Zero Gravity.
When Jenerik’s daughter Cicada was 4, he hauled her up climbs in Joshua Tree and throughout the Sierra. As she got older, her talent became noticeable and Jenerik took her to a JCCA competition at Touchstone’s Class 5 in San Rafael. She performed well and told her farther, “That was the best day of my life.” At that point, Zero Gravity was born. “I had been an athlete my whole life, playing many different sports and running track in college,” said Jenerik. “My father was often my coach and given my passion for understanding the dynamics of training, I adapted all that I knew and researched what I didn't to create the program that now exists.”
“Coaching, like climbing, is dynamic. It's not just about making someone physically strong, it is more about psychology and how to get the best out of an athlete. This relates to all aspects of their training and performance,” said Jenerik about coaching Zero Gravity. “Also every athlete has a slightly different set of strengths and weaknesses. Identifying these and reinforcing the weaknesses is a satisfying challenge. When I first started there was very little information available about effective training for climbing and none whatsoever about training youth. The body of a youth athlete can not be put through the same degree of stress as an adult. Developing appropriate physical and psychological coaching techniques is a never ending challenge. Additional challenges are balancing their passion for climbing with school and family needs.”
Before coaching and working as the foreman for the route setting at Mission Cliffs, Jenerik traveled the world playing hand built percussion instruments that blasted large fireballs.
Jenerik discussed training and applications to anyone. “The most important aspect is how hard you try. Excellence is not something that just happens, it is practiced every day. If you practice quitting every day you should expect nothing other than failure. Be consistent in your training and understand that it will take time. Erratic training will do virtually nothing for you. As an example, imagine that you want to run up a hill with 100# on your back. If you strap that weight to your back and go for it you will collapse. But if you add 1# every day, running up the hill each day for 100 days you will transform your body into being able to carry that load. Also identify the things you don't like to do as these tend to be ones weaknesses. We all like to do what we are good at. But if you can strengthen the things you aren't good at your overall ability will rise."
Zero Gravity trains 3 hours 4-5 days a week and each athlete has a detailed program that is specific to their goals and ability. Fun and satisfaction occur when one’s ability coincides with the complexity of the challenge. Monday through Thursday, the team meets at Ironworks, Mission Cliffs and Diablo Rock. Jenerik is at each of the gyms on a different day and Scott Cory, Cicada Jenerik and Joshua Levin, his assistant coaches, are at the other gyms.

Zero Gravity At Nationals in Atlanta
Touchstone's Zero Gravity youth climbing team crushed the USA Climbing, SCS National Championship. The competition was held at Stone Summit in Atlanta, GA, July 7-10 and the team came in second place with 9 national champions and 10 US national team spots.
In addition, team members Joshua Levin, Nick Bradley and Mirko Caballero were National Champions. US National Team spots went to Joshua Levin (Sport and Speed), Mirko Caballero
(Sport and Speed), Natalia Grossman (Sport and Speed), Jacquelyn Wu (Sport and Speed), Nick Bradley (Sport), Seth Rogers (Speed). Also in Finals were: Connor Everton, Dylan Meyerhoffer, Sera Busse, and Will Roderick. Also competing were: Eric Sanchez, Rick Gentry, Alexa Nazarian, Sam Steuart, and Michael Cohen.
The seventeen year old Joshua Levin set a new American Record for the 10 meter IFSC Speed Route with a time of 5.05 seconds. He clocked this time at the USA Climbing Youth National Championships in Atlanta, GA on July 10th 2011. The IFSC Speed route is an internationally certified route with the same hold in the same configuration. This is the climbing equivalent of the 100 meter dash in track and field. The holds in a rough approximation to the certified route can be found on the Yosemite Wall at Mission Cliffs.
Joshua is currently in Arco, Italy competing at the Rock Master, Adult World Championships. Live broadcast of this event can be found here

Zero Gravity Takes on Nor Cal Regional Championships
The Touchstone Zero Gravity Climbing Team, the youth climbing team, headed to the Northern California USAC-SCS Regional Champions, where they crushed for the sixth consecutive year. On May 14, 2011 the Nor Cal Regional Championships were held at Rocksport in Reno, NV.

The entire team qualified for the Division 1 Championships which will be held at Momentum in Sandy, UT on June 11 & 12, 2011. In addition they had 11 Regional Champions and 28 podium places. At the Div1 Championships these athletes will be vying for a bid to the National Championships in Atlanta, GA in July. There they will be working toward a place on the US National team and a trip to the Youth World Championships in Imst, Austria in August.

Zero Gravity at the ABS Nationals
The USA Climbing American Bouldering Series (ABS) Youth National Championships 2011 were held in Boulder, Colorado, from February 18 - 20, 2011
The Zero Gravity Team
The Touchstone Zero Gravity Climbing Team took six of their strongest competitors to the ABS National Championships over the weekend of February 18-20 and had an exceptional showing. Joshua Levin placed 3rd, Eric Sanchez was 4th and Jacquelyn Wu was 5th, all three qualifying for the US National Team. Charlie Andrews also made finals and finished 7th. Sera Busse was 2nd in qualifiers but ended up 10th overall. Will Roderick was 4th in qualifiers but dropped to 16th after semi finals.

This years competition saw the strongest, deepest field in ABS history. In addition the venue was a large warehouse with three amazing climbing walls, lighting arrays, PA systems and tons of space for spectators. The USAC set up the venue for the Adult National Championships which were held a week earlier. Video of this event can

The season starts March 19th with Local comps, moves on to the the Northern California Regional Championships May 14th, the Division 1 Championships in Salt Lake City June 11-12, the National Championships in Atlanta Georgia July 7-10 and the Youth World Championships in Imst Austria August 25-28. This years Touchstone Zero Gravity team is one of the strongest ever and have a very good shot at winning the Team
Championship award at the National Championships. Once again, many of these Touchstone youth are favorites to be selected for the US National Team.

10 Year Old Crushes the Boulders
On Sunday, November 14th, Dylan Meyerhoffer went to the Sads boulders of Bishop’s volcanic tablelands with a half dozen members of Zero gravity and crushed Rio’s Crack (v6).

For the past half year, Dylan trained with the Zero Gravity Youth Team under the tutelage of Scott Jenerik. “Scott’s really good at helping kids see their potential,” said Marykate Meyerhoffer, Dylan’s mother. “Scott asks them what their goals are and he tailors the program to what the kids say their goals are.” Dylan competes in the 11 and under category and was invited to nationals last year when he placed 6th in the North est America divisional. Dylan’s passion is for the outdoors though and climbing with Zero Gravity this year helped his climbing significantly.

Rio’s Crack suited him well. His small hands fit well onto the small crimps but the crusher still had to fight for the ascent. He made twice as many moves as most people “I’ve never tried that hard,” Dylan said. Dylan climbed classics like the Buttermilk Stem at the Buttermilks and Secret to Success at the Happies earlier in his career and has managed to do the mega-enduro Ironman traverse (v4) in two parts, and nearly crush the small crimps of Howard Carter sit (v6). His psyche is mostly on heading back to Fontainbleau.

Zero Gravity Team Dominates Division 1 Championshops
This past weekend, June 12th and 13th, the USA Climbing Division 1 Championships were held in Portland, Oregon at Club Sport. Touchstone's Zero Gravity Climbing Team was once again a dominant force with a number of the team receiving bids for the National Championships on July 8-11 in Atlanta Georgia.

Zero Gravity Team Crushes
On May 15th, Touchstone Zero Gravity won the USA Climbing Northern California Regional Championship for the fifth straight year! The Youth team, coached by Scot Jenerik, managed to pull another outstanding performance. Using the Touchstone facilities as a training ground, the team had a number of great accomplishments at the competition.

Youth Climbing- Zero Gravity
For the fifth consecutive year, the Touchstone Zero Gravity Team were the Northern CA Regional champions at the USAC Northern CA ABS11 Regional Championships at City Beach, Fremont, CA on January 16, 2010. Facing 85 other competitors from ages 8-19, Eric Sanchez, Joshua Levin, Sera Busse and Nicholas Bradley managed to rise above the heavy competition to become regional champions.

Touchstone Zero Gravity- World's and Raffle Results
The Touchstone Zero Gravity team returned from the Youth World Championships in France with a strong performance. The team was able to make it to the comp thanks to the generation donations of many Touchstone members who supported the team's raffle. Scott Jenerik described the comp saying, "The comp was amazing and the kids performed very well against the strongest field I've seen at a Youth World Championships. The French also put on an incredible show with over 7000 spectators, spotlights, jumbotron, etc. etc. The kids said that it made climbing look like a huge legitimate sport."
The Zero Gravity team performed well in the Sport competition with Joshua Levin placing 17, Cicada Jenerik 18, Hannnah Le 21, Scott Cory 21, and Eric Sanchez 48.
In the speed climbing competition Joshua Levin placed 4, Charlie Andrews placed 23, and Scott Cory placed 34.
The 2009 Touchstone Zero Gravity team was the strongest we've ever had.

Team Gravity Fundraiser Raffle
The Zero Gravity Climbing Team is currently hosting a raffle, at Mission Cliffs, to help send 6 of their athletes to compete in the Youth World Championships in Velance, France. Tickets are $1 each, or if you buy $5 you get 1 free, $10 is 3 free, etc. The drawing will be held on Saturday at Mission Cliffs, but you don't need to be present to win.
The Touchstone kids that will be competing are; Cicada Jenerik, Scott Cory, Josh Levin, Eric Sanchez, Hannah Le, Charlie Andrews, and their coach Scot Jenerik will be going as well. The competition will be the last week of August.
The prizes include awesome Madrock gear, t-shirts, a rope, and other rad stuff.

USAC Youth Nationals- Team Zero Gravity places 2nd!
This past weekend, from July 10-12, the USAC Youth Nationals were held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Touchstone's Zero Gravity Team placed second in the country! Of the 13 Zero Gravity climbers that qualified for the comp, seven made it on to the US National Team.
In August Josh, Hannah, Cicada, Scott, Eric, Charlie and Scot will travel to France for the Youth World Championships. Touchstone Zero Gravity will be hosting a raffle soon to help raise funds for this trip. Please give your support to these amazing athletes.

The Division 1 Championships incorporates the top youth climbers from Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Montana and Wyoming. Zero Gravity won the Team award over past National team Champions Vertical World, from Seattle, and 29 other teams.

Our very own kids climbing team, Zero Gravity just recently got back from the USAC ABS 10 National Championships, and to say the very least, they did AMAZING. I was just sent this article about just how amazing they all did at the Championships, and thought I'd let it speak for itself. "Touchstone Zero Gravity places Second for Teams at the USAC ABS 10 National Championships!
Touchstone's Zero Gravity Climbing Team traveled to Boulder Colorado over Presidents day weekend to compete in the ABS 10 National Championships. They Crushed, both as a team and individually.
Gabi Masse took 4th place in the Women's Open division in a very strong field.
In the youth division the Zero Gravity team took 2nd place with 4 podium finishes. Greggor Pierce and Joshua Levin were both National Champions. Cicada Jenerik and Sera Busse were third. Scott Cory was 7th, Silas Burger 26th, Jordan Vogel 28th and Kevin Ott 31st.
Zero Gravity were also the ABS Northern California Regional Champions.
The SCS (Sport Climbing Series) will start in mid march with the Division 1 Championships being held at Touchstone's Sacramento Pipeworks. The Nationals Championships will be in SLC, UT and the Youth World Championships are in France."

Touchstone Members at World Championships
Four Touchstone Members on the Zero Gravity Climbing Team competed in the Youth World Championships in Sydney, Australia this past month. Josh Levin and Cicada Jenerik Podiumed. Josh had the best overall showing with a Bronze Medal in Speed and a 7th place in difficulty. Cicada also scored a Bronze in Speed and was absolutely crushing in Semifinals until her foot unexpectedly popped. She ended up 14th. Gabi Masse and Scott Cory were also in first heading into Semis but ended up 21st and 14th.
Next years Youth World Championships will be in France.

Zero Gravity Members off to Worlds
The Touchstone youth on the Zero Gravity Climbing Team have had an amazing season this year. The team easily swept the top spots at the USA Climbing Northern California Regional Championships in May, which was hosted by Touchstone at the Great Western Power Company in Oakland. Zero Gravity were Regional Champions for the third straight year and the entire team qualified for the Division 1 Championships in Salt Lake City in June. Division 1 is easily the strongest division in the country and though a few kids were dropped there, ZG had multiple podiums and 10 of the team members qualified for Nationals, 9 in difficulty and 7 in speed.
At the National Championships the weekend of July 11-13 in Sunnyvale, CA seven of the nine made finals in difficulty. Zero Gravity placed 2nd in the country for Difficulty in the team scoring. Cicada Jenerik (4th) , Joshua Levin (2nd difficulty, National Champion in Speed) and Scott Cory (3rd) were all selected for the US National Team and will be competing in Sydney Australia at the end of August along with their Canadian National Teammate Gabi Masse. Eric Sanchez (4th) and Hannah Le (5th) both missed the team selection by 1 place. Nick Bradley (7th), Sera Busse, Yolan Caballero and Dakota Schwartz also competed.

Touchstone Memebers at ABS Nationals
Touchstone Concord and Team Fuego members Gregor Peirce, Gabe Matson, Evan Cronin and Wes Mirgalio traveled to Timonium, Maryland to compete in the ABS 8 National Championships that took place February 16-18. All four boys train with Coach Yuki Uemora for Team Fuego and were excited to be heading to their first National-level competition. Scott Cory and Troy Gibb, also from Touchstone Concord, attended the event with their team, Zero Gravity.
Despite this being Gregor's first on-site format competition, he took first in his division, Youth B (14-15 year olds), a truly impressive accomplishment. The rest of the Touchstone crew also did well, with Gabe and Evan taking 19th and 29th respectively in Youth A. Wes placed 23rd in the Juniors' division and Troy took 7th in Youth B. Scott Cory fought through an ankle injury sustained in the qualifying round and still managed to place 8th in Youth A.
Gregor climbed perfectly in the qualifying round, flashing all four problems. He continued his streak of great climbing in the finals, flashing the first problem and getting the 2nd high point on problems number two and three. Troy reached the high point on problem number 3 and came within a hair of making it a 1-2 finish in their category.
On the female side, Dakota Schwartz, competing in the Youth C category, took 14th place. This category was won by Mission Cliffs Member Cicada Jenerik. All in all, a great performance by everyone from Touchstone Concord! We look forward to following these strong, young climbers in their future adventures.
